Come on, now...

Is it just me or is there anyone else that thinks that getting out of school for Mardi Gras is really stupid? Only in the south (close to New Orleans) does this happen. Not everyone cares to participate in this dumb holiday. I personally think it's a celebration of sin. But, nevertheless, we get out of school for it, as do many elementary and high school. To tell the truth, I'd rather have a week long vacation for Thanksgiving...

  1. Oh I loved Mardi Gras! We were in a family krewe and I have many happy memories of planning and making costumes with my kids. Lot of glue and giggles and sequin fights. There is a whole other dimension to carnival that the tourist trade never sees. I am not sure how much of this survived after the storm but I know a lot of the old fabric stores are gone. You are right that many parts of the tourist side is pretty wild but the carnival I remember was like a piano recital/ school play/costume party. Everyone got to show off their children, after the pageant there was a break and the children went home with a baby sitter or grandma and the adults danced until breakfast at two. I am afraid that this may be just a memory but if you ever want to hear about “old” carnival I can happily bore you for quite a while if you are brave enough to ask.
